Fast-Tracked Success: Lakeview School’s Refurbishment

Lakeview School required additional teaching spaces in a short amount of time, so the Ministry of Education engaged Torque IP to oversee the refurbishment of two classrooms and several supporting areas.

The refurbishment encompassed a range of improvements. Installing acoustic ceiling treatments to enhance sound quality, laying new carpet and Lino flooring, and replacing existing socket outlets with RCD-protected alternatives to improve electrical safety. Lighting upgrades were also carried out, along with a new kitchen unit and water supply. Old wall coverings were removed and replaced with new Autex, helping to create a more engaging learning environment. To support digital learning, wireless access points were installed as part of the infrastructure improvements.

A key challenge emerged early in the project with the discovery of asbestos in the flooring. A refurbishment survey was conducted prior to commencement, and the presence of asbestos required immediate attention. Torque IP coordinated with a certified removal contractor and scheduled the work over weekends to minimise disruption to the school. Our team navigated this with efficiency, ensuring safety protocols were followed without disruption to the school and without impacting the overall project timeline.

“The level of service provided by Torque IP was nothing short of exceptional throughout the entire process. As the principal of Lakeview School, I was always kept very well informed with all aspects of the project. I was especially impressed with how the team addressed issues that arose during the work programme, with one example in particular being asbestos. In my opinion, the project could not have been done better and as a school we are very satisfied with the finished product.” Tim Nelson, Principal of Lakeview School.

Strong collaboration was essential to the project’s success. Torque IP worked closely with the main contractor QHL, whose understanding of working in a live school environment was invaluable. Mark Carter, our Project Manager from Torque IP, noted the positive impact of the improvements and credited the teamwork behind the project’s success.

“This was a team effort, and we’re proud to have delivered such positive results for the school and for the Ministry of Education”.

At Torque IP, we pride ourselves on delivering educational infrastructure projects that are fast, safe, and tailored to the real-world needs of schools, with Lakeview School being a testament to what’s possible.
